French style and savoir vivre, good manners, and training in the excellent Académie des Gouvernantes de Paris... French governesses are among the most popular at the moment. But what exactly makes them so special?

gouvernantes4The Académie des Gouvernantes
Founded in 2009, the Académie des Gouvernantes is one of the most prestigious French schools dedicated exclusively to the training of high-level household staff and in particular, the profession of the "French" governess. The training covers all aspects of the profession: child development, food preparation, creative games, communication, as well as safety to hygiene rules. Practical training and the rules of well-being are essential, beginning with the governess's appearance: an impeccable uniform and bun, rebellious locks are banned at the Académie des Gouvernantes. The rules are strict for students, and every morning they must go through a clothing inspection.

In addition to the former top level that these future "star" governesses receive, what also makes these "made in France" governesses is their training on good manners (which they will be able to teach to future children): formalities, the art of living, politeness, French behavior adapted to each circumstance, how to be the "perfect gentleman", etc.

gouvernante3What is a governess?
A governess is a qualified, experienced, professional nurse or nanny who specializes primarily in the educational aspect of the child's life within their family. They must oversee the children's care and development daily, using the parents’ educational beliefs, the social environment, and the family environment. Governesses must be able to help children in their schooling, in learning one or more foreign languages, and teach them "good manners"... French practices that are very popular in foreign countries.

The Governess's qualities
• Patience and affection.
• Attentiveness to the needs and the tastes of others, a useful quality that appeases both parents and children.
• Creativity and dynamism, inseparable qualities when organizing activities.
• A sense of work well done, rigor, and discipline.
• The mastery of good manners.
• Optimism is advised, it is an asset when settling certain delicate situations.
• The sense of teamwork, the governess must be willing to work closely with other household staff.
• To deal with a number of administrative issues, governesses must also acquire a good command of orthography and a culture of reading.

Chantal - Children

Bonjour, my name is Chantal. I’m often told that I’m “so French”. This is, in part, due to my traditional upbringing in Versailles, one of the most conservative cities in France, famous for its chateau, good schools and large families. I have three daughters. They’re model children, cheerful, nice and really fashionable. I’m in Paris almost every afternoon for my charity work and I still work part-time as a dance teacher. When the occasion presents itself, I teach etiquette to children at school. I’ll try and explain why my children get so many compliments.
