Throughout the season, the trench coat has undergone several transformations, and whatever your personal style, has always been able to adapt to it. This year, there are many interesting trench coat styles to choose from.  Classic or stylish a trench coat can be worn over a suit, jeans but also on a feminine lace dress. But let’s talk before of the story of the original trench coat.

11The trench coat dates to the First World War, when army soldiers needed lighter, more durable outerwear on the front lines. The British fashion houses, Burberry and Aquascutum, have laid claim to its invention; the former developed the coat’s signature gabardine fabric in 1879.

Trench coats have remained fashionable in the decades following World War II. Their original role as part of an army officer's uniform lent the trench coat a businesslike respectability, although many prefer to tie the belt in front (rather than use the buckle) to project a more casual look than strict military dress. Humphrey Bogart's Rick Blaine from Casablanca and Peter Sellers' Inspector Clouseau wore the trench coat in the public eye. 22

In the 1960s, radical intellectuals wore trench coats over black turtleneck sweaters, while some Mods wore trench coats as fashionable overcoats.

Throughout the late 20th century, the models were reworked, refined and modernized. While the old model favored an oversized shoulder contour and a wasp waist, the trench coat has evolved in style and material, now offering a diversity of fabrics beyond the original gabardine.

4 tips to choose a trench coat

da65b8e222237bcab00cd6c71b0b999f34db029e• If you are a “classy” girl  or want to do the good investment, make sure to choose one that is versatile and ideally fits you. I recommend a ¾ length trench coat that will look both stylish with long dresses and a jeans. But to get the “Parisian style”… you will have to wear with dress up casual outfits, like ripped regular jeans, skinnies, as well as tank tops, overalls and chambray shirts. I love it on Petit Bateau t-shirt and Repetto ballerina. Or high heels “décolletés” shoes.

• If you are a “trendy” girl, try on a cream-grey trench coat and style it with metallic accessories, like silver metallic shiny loafers and mirrored silvery sunglasses.

• If you want a trendy look, you should try pastel, bright red, green, blue and flashy colored trench coats. But to get the elegant “Parisian style”… you will have to wear it with neutral and classic separates or dresses.

• If you want to wear the trench coat with printed dresses and brightly colored blouses and colorful sweaters, you should choose it in neutral and classic shades.

Charlotte - Style & fashion

Bonsoir, my name is Charlotte. My mother, ex-model for Saint-Laurent, is American but I’ve lived in Paris since I was 4 years old. Since my mother was often abroad for fashion shows, my French grandmother, a dressmaker for Chanel, taught me the way to become a real Parisian. Today, I’m a wedding-planner and my husband directs a famous fashion magazine. I don’t have to tell you that I have a front seat at all of the fashion shows and I’ve developed a good general culture about fashion. Although I’m the personal shopper for my friends, my strong points are marriage and elegance.
