Well, “the” gift time of the year is upon us.  Every year, millions of men throughout the world receive a tie at Christmas and go off to the store and change it the next day as it is not to their taste!  What you should know, ladies, is that a tie is a very important accessory to men and that its colour, style, shape and how it is knotted are essential points that often underline our personality and the message we send out to the world!  So it is high time I explain how to choose a tie as a gift for the man in your life…

Just going Christmas shopping with you is quite enough to see how you choose a tie – some of you say “I want to get him a red tie.  I’ve had enough, I’ve been looking at him with a navy blue tie around his neck for the past twenty years” and others say “I’m going to get him a bright yellow tie – it’s the fashion this winter” or some of you even take a photo out of your wallet and say “I’d like a green tie to match his eyes”.  Not to mention those who take a sample piece of their favourite red evening gown and look for a tie in the same colour.  The choice of colour for a tie is always a delicate subject…

So, how should it be done?

I am going to disappoint you but the best method of choosing a tie that the man in your life will like is to open his wardrobe and choose one the same colour as the ones he already has!  Oh yes, this is how we men function!  A tad traditional, something of a collector.  Choose the same width, same length, same style and same colour and you will be sure to hear us say “just what I like!”  What can vary slightly is the type of pattern or a shade in the background.  But even that…

What if he has several shades in his wardrobe?

The man is the only person who can decide to change colour to match his needs and mood and even this change will often take time in the shop with considerable thought on the matter.  In fact, since the choice of colour takes both the colour of his shirt and his suit into account, it is up to the man to decide if the tie should be a contrast or if it should blend with the colour of his shirt or suit.  It’s a question of taste and personality!  So, the same applies to you, if you see several shades, choose the one you like best or the one you see him wear most often and buy one that is very similar.

A general rule

A plain, chic, sober black tie is mainly associated with a black suit and white shirt to give a pleasing contrast.

A red tie, for its part, will go perfectly with a pale blue or white shirt.

Maxime - Art & Culture

Bonjour, my name is Maxime. I obtained my name because my grandmother always took me to Maxime’s in Paris for my birthday, always in the company of her best girlfriend! When I was fourteen years old, I was already enamoured with their Parisian chatter. Now, when with friends, I know everything about the art of invisible make-up and light cocktails! The Parisian really has a very distinct character: she’s surprising and interesting. And she’s so feminine! As for invitations, it a real task: each day Paris offers new exhibitions, previews and vernissages. With a Parisian, you absolutely have to be in the right place at the right time!
