Paris is perfect for a romantic visit... part 1

Everyone has their own way of being romantic! While some might just enjoy sitting together on the terrace of the Café de Flore, others might prefer to stroll hand in hand through the maze of streets in the Latin Quarter or have their portrait drawn at Montmartre…

The Seine riverbanks have been popular with couples in love for centuries. The quaysides around the two islands of Ile Saint Louis and Ile de la Cité are ideal places for strolling together. The bridges also appeal to couples. Could it be because their arches symbolize an alliance? Or because the water flowing under them carries with it the wildest of promises?  According to tradition, lovebirds should kiss and make a wish under the Pont Marie, nicknamed ‘lovers’ bridge’. A more recent custom is that of hanging a so-called ‘love’ padlock on the railings of the Pont de l’Archevêché and the Pont des Arts to immortalize one’s love.

Kissing on public benches

Park benches in public parks and gardens in Paris are perfect places for loving couples of all ages to whisper sweet nothings to each other.  Historically, the Tuileries Gardens have always been a prime location for libertine behaviour. The wide alleys were once the theatre of love and games of chance. These days you’re more likely to see couples stroking Maillol’s sensual marble sculptures, or crunching toffee apples at the funfair in the gardens in summer. Exchange kisses at a vertiginous height in the Temple of Sibyl, perched on a rocky summit in the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, or in the dark in the cave below with its stalagmites. Embrace sedately near the Fontaine Médicis in the Jardin du Luxembourg, kiss like the ancient Romans in the Arènes de Lutèce and canoodle above street level in the gardens of the Coulée Verte. In very cold weather, the tropical environment of the Serres d’Auteuil is a good place to be, as are the hothouses in the Jardin des Plantes. For discreet confidences, the gardens of Rohan and Fontenay of the National Archives area a favourite with lovebirds. These places, restored and reopened to the public in 2011, offer the atmosphere of a romantic 19th century garden with umbrella pine trees, gloriettes and topiary.

The timeless charm of the covered shopping arcades

Symbolic of old Paris, the covered arcades are highly prized by Parisians. With their high glass roofs, eclectic boutiques and old-fashioned charm, they have an atmosphere all of their own that is conducive to a romantic stroll, away from the noise of the city. The most refined are the Galerie Vivienne and Galerie Colbert, with their neo-classical decor. The Passages Jouffroy and Passage Verdeau will delight those who like collector’s items, while the Passage du Grand Cerf and the Galerie Vero Dodat are magnets for design fans. The Passage Choiseul is another popular spot to linger, and the Passage Brady with its numerous Indian restaurants transports you to the subcontinent.

Maxime - Art & Culture

Bonjour, my name is Maxime. I obtained my name because my grandmother always took me to Maxime’s in Paris for my birthday, always in the company of her best girlfriend! When I was fourteen years old, I was already enamoured with their Parisian chatter. Now, when with friends, I know everything about the art of invisible make-up and light cocktails! The Parisian really has a very distinct character: she’s surprising and interesting. And she’s so feminine! As for invitations, it a real task: each day Paris offers new exhibitions, previews and vernissages. With a Parisian, you absolutely have to be in the right place at the right time!
